| Notes: |
| - | Cipollina's reels are believed to be masters,
but this is not determined. This particular recording is just a little bit
oversaturated, but is generally very nice. The material is very cool, bluesy
Gravenites-type material. |

Unknown generation, but quite likely the lowest possible
|
A John & Nick recording, years before they worked together full time. There
is a very private sound as it's just them, minus the Taj Mahal appearance.
|
"East Texas" tracks sometimes are just a certain part of the song being
worked on. I don't think this song ever released by any artist. Although
not certain, it sounds like a Gravenites original piece.
"//Jam//" is an item that as appeared as 'Instrumental Jam' by Quicksilver
on the bootleg "Thru the Years and Thru the Bands" or 'Caravan', a Cipollina
home recording from 1969. This is finally where mysterious track that really
belongs.
|
|
I don't believe this has even appeared in circulation before. Enjoy!

This is an early (and possibly the first) show of the Gravenites-Cipollina Band (aka Thunder and Lightning). This is a very good audience recording which has not been previously circulated. Nick and John were playing a warm-up gig for their then upcoming tour of Europe.
The between song pauses were cut and there is an occasional tape pause at the beginning of a song. These were present on the master tape. Overall the sound is very good without too much intrusion from the audience.

This is a decent sounding early Cipollina / Gravenites band recording. Disc
two could possibly be 12-10-79, or the second set from 12-9-79. If anyone has
any info on this please let me know. I have done nothing to this recording
other than transfer it into soundforge and track it. The order of things are
the way they were on my 20 year old cassettes.

"here's a great 3 cd set of music by john cipollina and nick gravenites recorded at the lone star cafe in nyc on dec. 9 and 10, 1979. what
we have are three out of the four shows done over these two nights. i put this up together as i consider this as a set. this contains the
early and late shows from the first night recorded from the sb by me and only the late show from the following night from my 2nd gen reel
of a sb recording. i have never come across the second night's early show. maybe one of our members has that one to contribute here. this
is a nice companion set to the show i did from my father's place in roslyn a couple of nights before. unlike that show which was done half
sb, half aud, these are straight sb recordings and sound fantastic. all of these were taped with john's permission." - Dave Tamarkin

[Booklet notes from the Legend CD]
We had just finished a tough tour through Europe, last gig was in
Dortmund, Germany, and we were trying to recover our trashed physical
symptoms, numbed out in the giant bathtubs and feather beds of the Romischer
Kaiser Hotel. It was hard to believe we could hurt so bad, we had fried so
crisply. While drinking the sublime Dortmunder out of beautiful glasses, we
discussed our future plans. Our German record label had no plans to have us
record another album, and we were gonna be doggoned if we were going to let
what we had just gone through go to waste. Our chops were up from all the
gigging, and our psyches were fleshed out with new experience, and anyway,
we weren't ready to go home yet. We called around to our German friends,
and we finally found a studio in Hamburg that would record us on credit.
The studio was located on the busy banks of the Hamburg water traffic
freeway in a dark and cold stone building with no central heat. We moved in,
slept on mattresses on the floor shivering next to small plug-in electric
heaters, and proceeded to record this music in what was basically a
refrigerator. Everytime you opened the door to the studio room, the cold air
would blast in and all the musical instruments would go out of tune. Hey
folks, we did it for the band! How could we abandon this glamor world? I'm
glad to share with you my experiences with John Cipollina and the band.
"Born in Chicago" and "Small Walk-In Box" didn't make it on the first album,
but now we have CD's that give us the extra time to include them.
Nick Gravenites
There's nothing new in the idea that some of the best rock musicians of the
last 15 or 50 years are not as famous as they ought to be; genuine talent has
always counted for less than image, hype or sheer luck. Nick Gravenites (or if
you prefer Nick da Greek) is a classic case; despite being a great guitarist,
songwriter and producer, (as well as being in possession of one of the most
powerful voices in the business) genuine success has always eluded him, which
is a pity because few white people have the knowledge or feeling for the
blues that he does; he's got so much of it, it's coming out of his ears.
Gravenites was originally part of a thriving folk and blues scene in
Chicago in the early '60s but in 1962 he travelled out west to San Francisco.
The Beats had gone but folk was booming and Gravenites was able to gig
regularly at places like The Fox and Hound and The Coffee Gallery, both in
the city's North Beach district. Quite often sharing the bill was a young
fresh in from Texas, called Janis Joplin. Many musicians, later to attract the
attention of the world's press during the 'Summer of Love', were also on
the circuit - pre-electricity and, largely pre-acid.
Within in a couple of years Gravenites was in Chicago running a blues
club called the Burning Bush, amongst other things, however when '67 rolled
around, with every musician in the States heading out to San Francisco,
Nick did likewise. Things were different from '62 everywhere was peace, love
and good vibes, for a couple of months at least. Gravenites was there
primarily to join Mike Bloomfield's new band, known at the time as An
American Music Band but shortly to change their name to The Electric Flag.
The Flag became the definitive blues/funk outfit of the late '60s, albums
like 'A Long Time Coming' were required listening for anyone remotely
interested in the 'new rock'. Gravenites' amazing gravelly voice was
heard on hi-fi's all over the western world. After a couple of years
the band ground to a halt, he made a solo album 'My Labors' and joined
a last gasp, post Janis version of Big Brother.
The '70s proved a lean time for Gravenites, until it became apparent that
people in Europe still wanted to hear him play, especially as he'd teamed
up with the ubiquitous John Cipollina, guitar picker extra-ordinaire,
wolf fetishist and refugee from the pioneering acid-rock outfit,
Quicksilver Messenger Service. QMS were the definitive proponents of the
guitar-based San Francisco sound, who should have conquered the world
but failed to, owing to a seemingly in-built self destruct mechanism.
Their music owed much to Cipolllina's playing, at times menacingly
growling, at other times hard edged and bluesy.
Quicksilver staggered on into the mid '70s but Cipollina wisely quit
at the end of 1970, taking his distinctive playing into Copperhead and
then on to various loose aggregations, notably Terry & the Pirates.
The link up with Gravenites came in 1979 when it seemed that neither of them
were likely to play live in Europe again. However, since then they have
been fairly regular visitors, especially to Germany and Italy where they
are able to fill concert halls night after night.
This album was recorded during a recent tour, when they were augmented
by Marcus David on drums and Al Staehely on bass. Staehely is notable for
having the distinction of having played in a bogus line-up of Spirit, he
now doubles as a lawyer in L.A.
This album is, of course, blues based and displays Gravenites'
interpretations of a couple of standards plus some fine new songs, not
to mention a reworking of his own classic 'Buried Alive in the Blues'.
Staehely also contributes a couple of excellent originals and needless
to say Cipollina's guitar is as fiery as ever, notably on 'Bad Luck Baby'
which has echoes of the old Quicksilver and the reworking of 'Pride of Man',
the Hamilton Camp number, which was an integral part of the old QMS set.
In terms of chart success this album is unlikely to compete with Soft
Cell, which is a pity because music played with this kind of integrity
and ability is all too rare these days. I, for one, am glad that these guys
are still doing it.

| Here is a rarely circulated show from the fall 1982 tour of the Gravenites Cipollina Band.
Nothing new here because setlists were pretty much the same throughout the tour. However, it is a nice audience recording that JC fans should want to add to their collections. |
| |
| The guy who sent me the show claims he received it on 2 cassettes from the original taper many years ago. He has no clue which recording equipment was used. The tapes were transfered to mini disk and eventually to CDR using a Pioneer stand-alone writer. The resulting CDR's were ripped with EAC in secure mode and offset correction. |
| |
| Sound quality overall is quite fine but unequal, maybe due to 2 different tapes used (TDK SA90 / Maxell UD XLII C60). Following are 2 samples, so you can judge by yourself. |
| |
| Thanks to Mr. E & Dr. T for supplying the show. |

Note: The Tandberg hat a contact problem. at the end of the show it made a bit trouble, and due to hanging out with Nick and John all day, I was a little handicaped, so it took a moment until I was able to handle it.

Got this a while back here on Dime, thanks to original poster 'wh1pnk' (John M) with
whose approval this superb remaster is now posted.
| Changes made (Nero 7): |
| - | Corrected balance offset, reducing RH channel to 80-85% |
| - | Increased volume levels on disk 1 by 3-4dB |
| - | Noise print NR, worked great and instrument dynamics appear improved |
| - | Cross-faded tracks for smooth transitions and fix abrupt cuts |
| - | Removed some tuning / chat |
| - | Fixed several loud (microphone?) thumps |
| - | Original 3 CDs now fit on 2 CDR-90's |
Quality: EX, I'd be happy with this as an official CD
I grabbed several of this great band's European tour posts, but this was the only very
good quality one, albeit quite hissy with balance off-centre and several abrupt cuts at
track ends.
There were also 2 different recording settings (or sources?), split originally across
3 CDs and now between CDs 1 and 2, so I edited it all (details above) and now a superb
recording is even better.
You'll never believe this a 2nd gen AUD (below), it could easily be an SBD, so please
just grab it and...
...Enjoy this brilliant music !!

"Seems to be a Gravenites Cipollina band with Terry Dolan and David Hayes from
Terry & The Pirates sitting in. The line-up was said here is the one given
when the show entered circulation. I have no reason to doubt it as Cipollina
bands sometimes did mix it up."

Really good audience recording. Meet half Terry & the Pirates joining Thunder & Lightnin'... Really
interesting show, with some tracks only few times played, and a rare 10 minutes version of BDM in the
encore... Nick & John booked around 25 shows as Nicksilver, between 83 & 84.

Walking Blues cuts quickly at the end of the song. The house deck I was plugged into was stopped cutting my feed.
"My friend Phil Scott (RIP) was covering the soundboard for the regular guy who was sick and told me to bring a
deck. I took a Kenwood house deck and plugged in. The soundboard at Swift's used an audience blend mic, creating a
matrix effect, so crowd noise between songs and applause are very much present. The blend mic was about 6 feet off
the ground, so anyone standing in front of the board was effectively talking into this mic. This is apparent in
between songs but not an issue when the music is played. Only 2 or 3 people ever asked me for a copy of this, so
it's pretty uncirculated. My guess is a few more will want this here. Enjoy." - BillFromMA
