| Notes: |
| - | Cipollina's reels are believed to be masters,
but this is not determined. This particular recording is just a little bit
oversaturated, but is generally very nice. The material is very cool, bluesy
Gravenites-type material. |

Unknown generation, but quite likely the lowest possible
|
A John & Nick recording, years before they worked together full time. There
is a very private sound as it's just them, minus the Taj Mahal appearance.
|
"East Texas" tracks sometimes are just a certain part of the song being
worked on. I don't think this song ever released by any artist. Although
not certain, it sounds like a Gravenites original piece.
"//Jam//" is an item that as appeared as 'Instrumental Jam' by Quicksilver
on the bootleg "Thru the Years and Thru the Bands" or 'Caravan', a Cipollina
home recording from 1969. This is finally where mysterious track that really
belongs.
|
|
I don't believe this has even appeared in circulation before. Enjoy!

This is an early (and possibly the first) show of the Gravenites-Cipollina Band (aka Thunder and Lightning). This is a very good audience recording which has not been previously circulated. Nick and John were playing a warm-up gig for their then upcoming tour of Europe.
The between song pauses were cut and there is an occasional tape pause at the beginning of a song. These were present on the master tape. Overall the sound is very good without too much intrusion from the audience.

OK folks, this is not the best recording ever, just a discreet audience recording, but this show is really hard to find and has a really interesting and unusual setlist, so it worths to have it..enjoy it...

Contrast Clause
"The version that is already here on DIME has inferiour Sound Quality, in my opinion.
It sounds rather muffled and misses the trebels.
Also, it missing the song 'Little Bit Of Your Love' which is present on my now seeded copy."
"On the other hand, the last song 'Born In Chicago' is a bit about three minutes longer on the other version.
On my version, the recording cuts after about 46 Minutes (as the tape runs out)
I have smoothed this with a fade-out."
"But BOTH versions of the song 'Born In Chicago' are INCOMPLETE, though (but on the other version, this songs goes about three minutes longer, but is still not complete as the Broadcast ends)"
"My now seeded version comes from a 2.Generation tape.
The sound is clear and crisp, BUT there is a a fair amount of hiss audible.
It sounds like, the Master-tape or the first gen.-tape maybe has been recorded with Dolby B or C and re-played without Dolby.
Therefore this had produced this hiss."
"Also, it sounds to me, that my copy maybe runs a bit faster than the other seeded copy.
Can't say, which is the correct speed, though (??)"
"For me I must say, that I rather prefer my clear and crispy sounding copy with the hiss, than the
other seeded copy, which sounds rather muffled and is missing the trebles."
"And I have done nothing to remove the hiss. because i rather can live with some hiss than with a noise-reduced (spoiled) recording."

Opening For Sam & Dave, Early & Late Sets
Lineage: master sbd/aud mix cassette > audio cd
ljs_54:trade cdr > eac > wav > cool edit > cdwav > shntool > flac6
ljs_54 Notes: "Don't remember who I got this from but I believe it was a weed on the Cipollina Yahoo group. It was originally transferred and seeded there by Dave Tamarkin. I cleaned it up a bit in Cool Edit, raised the volume, re-tracked it in CDWAV, and FLAC'ed it."
From Dave T: "Dave mentioned that this wasn't really billed as Nick Gravenites & Friends, even though that's the way they're introduced for the 2nd set, but more like Nick Gravenites & John Cipollina.
He said for those wondering, Alex Ligertwood is not on this show, as Ligertwood didn't hook up with Cip until the 80's with Sounds of San Francisco.
Although not introduced by Nick in the outro, Roger Troy plays bass and provides added vocals.
The sets were short as they were opening for Sam & Dave.
Dave actually made the recording with Cip's ok.
The term "Thunder & Lightning" was still a couple of years away from being used."

This is a decent sounding early Cipollina / Gravenites band recording. Disc
two could possibly be 12-10-79, or the second set from 12-9-79. If anyone has
any info on this please let me know. I have done nothing to this recording
other than transfer it into soundforge and track it. The order of things are
the way they were on my 20 year old cassettes.

"Here's a great 3 cd set of music by John Cipollina and Nick Gravenites recorded at the Lone Star Cafe in NYC on dec. 9 and 10, 1979. What
we have are three out of the four shows done over these two nights. I put this up together as I consider this as a set. This contains the
early and late shows from the first night recorded from the sb by me and only the late show from the following night from my 2nd gen reel
of a sb recording. I have never come across the second night's early show. Maybe one of our members has that one to contribute here. This
is a nice companion set to the show I did from My Father's Place in Roslyn a couple of nights before. Unlike that show which was done half
sb, half aud, these are straight sb recordings and sound fantastic. All of these were taped with John's permission." - Dave Tamarkin

[Note from LP back cover, also included in the Legend CD booklet]
There's nothing new in the idea that some of the best rock musicians of the
last 15 or 50 years are not as famous as they ought to be; genuine talent has
always counted for less than image, hype or sheer luck. Nick Gravenites (or if
you prefer Nick da Greek) is a classic case; despite being a great guitarist,
songwriter and producer, (as well as being in possession of one of the most
powerful voices in the business) genuine success has always eluded him, which
is a pity because few white people have the knowledge or feeling for the
blues that he does; he's got so much of it, it's coming out of his ears.
Gravenites was originally part of a thriving folk and blues scene in
Chicago in the early '60s but in 1962 he travelled out west to San Francisco.
The Beats had gone but folk was booming and Gravenites was able to gig
regularly at places like The Fox and Hound and The Coffee Gallery, both in
the city's North Beach district. Quite often sharing the bill was a young
fresh in from Texas, called Janis Joplin. Many musicians, later to attract the
attention of the world's press during the 'Summer of Love', were also on
the circuit - pre-electricity and, largely pre-acid.
Within in a couple of years Gravenites was in Chicago running a blues
club called the Burning Bush, amongst other things, however when '67 rolled
around, with every musician in the States heading out to San Francisco,
Nick did likewise. Things were different from '62 everywhere was peace, love
and good vibes, for a couple of months at least. Gravenites was there
primarily to join Mike Bloomfield's new band, known at the time as An
American Music Band but shortly to change their name to The Electric Flag.
The Flag became the definitive blues/funk outfit of the late '60s, albums
like 'A Long Time Coming' were required listening for anyone remotely
interested in the 'new rock'. Gravenites' amazing gravelly voice was
heard on hi-fi's all over the western world. After a couple of years
the band ground to a halt, he made a solo album 'My Labors' and joined
a last gasp, post Janis version of Big Brother.
The '70s proved a lean time for Gravenites, until it became apparent that
people in Europe still wanted to hear him play, especially as he'd teamed
up with the ubiquitous John Cipollina, guitar picker extra-ordinaire,
wolf fetishist and refugee from the pioneering acid-rock outfit,
Quicksilver Messenger Service. QMS were the definitive proponents of the
guitar-based San Francisco sound, who should have conquered the world
but failed to, owing to a seemingly in-built self destruct mechanism.
Their music owed much to Cipolllina's playing, at times menacingly
growling, at other times hard edged and bluesy.
Quicksilver staggered on into the mid '70s but Cipollina wisely quit
at the end of 1970, taking his distinctive playing into Copperhead and
then on to various loose aggregations, notably Terry & the Pirates.
The link up with Gravenites came in 1979 when it seemed that neither of them
were likely to play live in Europe again. However, since then they have
been fairly regular visitors, especially to Germany and Italy where they
are able to fill concert halls night after night.
This album was recorded during a recent tour, when they were augmented
by Marcus David on drums and Al Staehely on bass. Staehely is notable for
having the distinction of having played in a bogus line-up of Spirit, he
now doubles as a lawyer in L.A.
This album is, of course, blues based and displays Gravenites'
interpretations of a couple of standards plus some fine new songs, not
to mention a reworking of his own classic 'Buried Alive in the Blues'.
Staehely also contributes a couple of excellent originals and needless
to say Cipollina's guitar is as fiery as ever, notably on 'Bad Luck Baby'
which has echoes of the old Quicksilver and the reworking of 'Pride of Man',
the Hamilton Camp number, which was an integral part of the old QMS set.
In terms of chart success this album is unlikely to compete with Soft
Cell, which is a pity because music played with this kind of integrity
and ability is all too rare these days. I, for one, am glad that these guys
are still doing it.

[Note from the Legend CD booklet]
We had just finished a tough tour through Europe, last gig was in
Dortmund, Germany, and we were trying to recover our trashed physical
symptoms, numbed out in the giant bathtubs and feather beds of the Romischer
Kaiser Hotel. It was hard to believe we could hurt so bad, we had fried so
crisply. While drinking the sublime Dortmunder out of beautiful glasses, we
discussed our future plans. Our German record label had no plans to have us
record another album, and we were gonna be doggoned if we were going to let
what we had just gone through go to waste. Our chops were up from all the
gigging, and our psyches were fleshed out with new experience, and anyway,
we weren't ready to go home yet. We called around to our German friends,
and we finally found a studio in Hamburg that would record us on credit.
The studio was located on the busy banks of the Hamburg water traffic
freeway in a dark and cold stone building with no central heat. We moved in,
slept on mattresses on the floor shivering next to small plug-in electric
heaters, and proceeded to record this music in what was basically a
refrigerator. Everytime you opened the door to the studio room, the cold air
would blast in and all the musical instruments would go out of tune. Hey
folks, we did it for the band! How could we abandon this glamor world? I'm
glad to share with you my experiences with John Cipollina and the band.
"Born in Chicago" and "Small Walk-In Box" didn't make it on the first album,
but now we have CD's that give us the extra time to include them.

Another great show with a really interesting setlist... just a fresh transfer from my Cipo's cassette... pretty good recording, i
have soundbourd on the tape, but it sounds to me like a really good audience tape... enjoy it...

Got this tape in the mid eighties from my roomate who is Marcus Davids', the drummer who played with the band
on their 1979 tour of Europe, cousin. I also rec. Copenhagen Nov 19 1979 and one set from Holland
Nov 22 1979. Quality B is what I would consider this tape. There are a few drop outs during the show which I have
labeled with a /. I have seen set lists for this show but they never show encores. Who Do You Love>Suzie-Q/ is all I seem to find.

| Here is a rarely circulated show from the fall 1982 tour of the Gravenites Cipollina Band.
Nothing new here because setlists were pretty much the same throughout the tour. However, it is a nice audience recording that JC fans should want to add to their collections. |
| |
| The guy who sent me the show claims he received it on 2 cassettes from the original taper many years ago. He has no clue which recording equipment was used. The tapes were transfered to mini disk and eventually to CDR using a Pioneer stand-alone writer. The resulting CDR's were ripped with EAC in secure mode and offset correction. |
| |
| Sound quality overall is quite fine but unequal, maybe due to 2 different tapes used (TDK SA90 / Maxell UD XLII C60). Following are 2 samples, so you can judge by yourself. |
| |
| Thanks to Mr. E & Dr. T for supplying the show. |

Note: The Tandberg hat a contact problem. at the end of the show it made a bit trouble, and due to hanging out with Nick and John all day, I was a little handicaped, so it took a moment until I was able to handle it.

Got this a while back here on Dime, thanks to original poster 'wh1pnk' (John M) with
whose approval this superb remaster is now posted.
| Changes made (Nero 7): |
| - | Corrected balance offset, reducing RH channel to 80-85% |
| - | Increased volume levels on disk 1 by 3-4dB |
| - | Noise print NR, worked great and instrument dynamics appear improved |
| - | Cross-faded tracks for smooth transitions and fix abrupt cuts |
| - | Removed some tuning / chat |
| - | Fixed several loud (microphone?) thumps |
| - | Original 3 CDs now fit on 2 CDR-90's |
Quality: EX, I'd be happy with this as an official CD
I grabbed several of this great band's European tour posts, but this was the only very
good quality one, albeit quite hissy with balance off-centre and several abrupt cuts at
track ends.
There were also 2 different recording settings (or sources?), split originally across
3 CDs and now between CDs 1 and 2, so I edited it all (details above) and now a superb
recording is even better.
You'll never believe this a 2nd gen AUD (below), it could easily be an SBD, so please
just grab it and...
...Enjoy this brilliant music !!

"Seems to be a Gravenites Cipollina band with Terry Dolan and David Hayes from
Terry & The Pirates sitting in. The line-up was said here is the one given
when the show entered circulation. I have no reason to doubt it as Cipollina
bands sometimes did mix it up."

Really good audience recording. Meet half Terry & the Pirates joining Thunder & Lightnin'... Really
interesting show, with some tracks only few times played, and a rare 10 minutes version of BDM in the
encore... Nick & John booked around 25 shows as Nicksilver, between 83 & 84.

Off my master; Rick and I were sitting at one of the few tables about 15 feet from the band behind the tiny dance floor. There was apparently one more set. My master just stops here; must've run out of battery (I also recorded the night before - soundboard, of which I have the second set only for some reason...I'll up that soon too) or maybe we had to leave, I don't recall. So this is it.

Walking Blues cuts quickly at the end of the song. The house deck I was plugged into was stopped cutting my feed.
"My friend Phil Scott (RIP) was covering the soundboard for the regular guy who was sick and told me to bring a
deck. I took a Kenwood house deck and plugged in. The soundboard at Swift's used an audience blend mic, creating a
matrix effect, so crowd noise between songs and applause are very much present. The blend mic was about 6 feet off
the ground, so anyone standing in front of the board was effectively talking into this mic. This is apparent in
between songs but not an issue when the music is played. Only 2 or 3 people ever asked me for a copy of this, so
it's pretty uncirculated. My guess is a few more will want this here. Enjoy." - BillFromMA

I got this show from the same person who gave me 12/15/84 and 10/19/84. A very generous friend indeed!
I don't know if this is the whole show or not. The other tapes are broken up as 1st Set, 2nd Set etc. but this one just says "Soundboard" and lists the date & location.
Even so, it's a great recording and performance. Check out the samples.
A few songs are clipped at the beginning:
Trouble In Mind - cuts in at "Babe I'm Blue"
Baby Please Don't Go - first couple of notes clipped
Blues Back Off Of Me - first couple of notes clipped

Off my master tape. Trouble In Mind is cut in the beginning; with 8+ minutes left on the tape after Fantasy World, the guy running the board and doing the recording for me decided to fast-forward and flip the tape and missed recording the start of the song...so there you go, a long-time mystery solved (what? Nobody wondered about it? Imagine that). On the other hand, the tape was perilously close to the end after Blues Back Off Of Me and he swapped in the new tape with seconds to spare before I Did It For The Band. So there you are.
Greg's pretty high up in the mix; I think he'd like that! We get a nice solo from Doug Kilmer in Nick's Highland Fling leading to Nick rightly raving about his rhythm section. A higher generation version of this exists on archive.org, FWIW (misdated as 1983-11-03).
So anyway, check it out: this was a double bill with the New Riders (I didn't tape that) for only $4. Amazing.
Enjoy!

with the COMPLETE show. This show is a real travelouge, playing in RI, singing about Chicago, Reno, SF and stops in between. Did I
mention, "we got a rockin band..." |

"This was a gift from a friend who was able to patch in to the board. The recording levels on my
tape are a bit low which may explain why it seems a little hissier than a 1st gen should sound."
There are some cuts but they aren't too bad:
Run Outta West cuts in at the beginning just before the vocals start - tape flip
The Outro at the end of the 2nd Set cuts in - tape flip
Last Call cuts off - the tape ran out
I don't remember if there was any music after Last Call - can anyone help?
There's another recording of this show: "... i have this longer, with Last call blues complete and
I'll put the trigger after it, but your recording, judging from the samples, is really superior and a
lower generation compare to mine..."

This is another tape I received as a gift from a friend who was able to patch in to the board. The recording levels on my tape are a bit low which may explain why it seems a little hissier than a 1st gen should sound.
The first few notes of two songs are clipped due to tape flips: I Did It For The Band, Hollywood Baby. No vocals are missing.
And speaking of vocals, there's a vocalist identified only as "Diane" on Track 7 Disc 2. Maybe someone knows her name as well as the name of the song she sings.

Upgraded version of a great show by Thunder and Lightning, by request. This version has more of the things I have learned to do(finally) like deleting the 2 second drops etc.
2 minor flaws to an otherwise excellent recording, sounding like a soundboard to me. Two tape flips came with a tape pull to start the sides...sorry bout that, but that is what you get in this thing...
Cassette (2nd gen)/EAC > wav > FLAC > traders little helper
This show was after a Grateful Dead show in the Tahoe area. I understand it was a perfect setting, for John's birthday...

"Huge thanks to EnXXo for this! This is his FLAC, info., etc. He also helped
me end a decade search for this recording! ;) All I did was rename the files
for L.M.A. standards. Nothing else was changed or done."
"Of note, of course, is the special guest appearance of John Lee Hooker! Billy
Roberts also makes a rare public appearance, singing his own song that became
a legend, "Hey Joe." Also, this is the only Gravenites Cipollina show I've
seen with Greg Anton (Zero, Heart Of Gold, Greggs Eggs) is the drummer,
making some of regular songs sound quite a bit different."

Masters from Nick or John > Myshadows's 3rd Gen Cassette > M-Audio Transit > Cool Edit > CD Wave Editor > Flac
"here's an interesting recording i got from fellow dimer myshadow. going by the info supplied with the tape, what we have is john
cipollina and nick gravenites fantasy sessions from 1988. i don't have exact dates or info but i did a lot of searching and found
none of this material has been released. as we lost john in the spring of 1989, i would imagine these are among the last studio
recordings he was involved in. many of these songs were regulars in john & nick's shows over the years and there are some other
songs i've never heard before. a couple of the songs sound more like live rehearsals with mikes placed in the studio. the rest
is all quite good quality. also of interest are the last three songs which are parodies although i can't tell who is doing the
vocals. it's all worth having for sure. whatever info i have including the set list is in the file. a big thanks to myshadow for
the source tape and to be able to let us share it here."
NB: Tracks 1 - 11 are probably Nick's Blue Star LP.

"Hi Folks

Soundquality is A-/B+ (aud). I´m not sure about the lineup , so I post
the lineup from 1988. If it´s not correct let me know.
Changed nothin`on the show and share this like I get it.
Hope you enjoy"

NTSC DVD video
This was one of John Cipollina's last live shows before he died on May 29, 1989. The interview sections are especially great though it is mostly Nick Gravenites doing the talking. I'm not sure how much this material has circulated. My unknown lineage VHS tape was traded for many years ago and was copied using a PAL to NTSC standards converting VCR to do a "non-lossy" transfer. If anyone has a superior copy of this as PAL or NTSC, please transfer and seed it and I will then pull this copy. It's all decent quality but there are a few minor video gremlins that should not detract from your enjoyment.
I love the interview segments and they are short so I'm including the best parts of the interviews as audio samples in the comments. That way you can still hear most of the interview without having to download the entire DVD.
The first song, Dekalb Blues is cut up by the interviews but is complete in the raw footage. The second song, Drugs and Alcohol is included twice, since it was at the end of the interviews (cut slightly) and is also complete in the raw footage. The video quality is different in the two sections, but both are quite good.
with Greek subtitles over English language spoken segments
Low gen. VHS tape (NTSC) > Sony SL-HF1000 > Sony DVMC-DA2 Media Converter > Apple Macintosh Final Cut Pro (minor "nip and tuck" edits, filter to mask bottom of screen "head switch jitter" and chaptering) > Compressor > DVD Studio Pro (menu and authoring) > VIDEO_TS file set.
Audio post capture processing in Pro Tools (normalization plus a few clicks seamlessly removed). Audio placed back into Final Cut Pro before Compressor down-sampling.
Video - NTSC 720x480 VBR 7.7 Mbps peak, 6.2 Mbps average data rate, 2-pass.
Audio - choice of: Dolby Digital 2/0 (L,R), 48 kHz sample rate, 448 kbps data rate, or:
Linear PCM (2 channel 48kHz 16 bit).
